Employment for me.

That's right. I'm now officially employed in Santa Barbara County. I've been offered and accepted a job at SYR. I'm happy with the way everything has turned out. I have a job that pays more than the other places I was talking to. I get benefits and I get to accumulate vacation and sick time. It's no where near as good as the benefits at UCB, but really I wasn't expecting it to be. It's going to be about 15 miles from my house, so not so close but then again I've just cut my commute time in half and the traffic is no where near the way it is in the bay area. I believe that the only downside is that I DON'T have to wear a uniform. I was looking forward to not having to think about what I'll be wearing in the morning. Oh well. It gives me an excuse to buy clothes....I need them for work.

I start June 10th so I have a whole week with no work in which to pack up all my crap. Yea for me. Here's the thing though. I think I'm going to need some help moving my crap down. Mom is ditching me to go to NY to visit my sister. Not that she shouldn't go see my sister, but couldn't she have waited until Monday? Anyways, if anyone would be willing it would be great to have some help. Michele already offered, but in case she changed her mind I'm not going to hold her to it. If no one can, no big deal, Mom basically offered to come down a week or two later with the bigger stuff. I don't really have a lot, I just can't fit it all into my little car.

Anyways Nuala is happy today. Things are falling into place. Yea me!

Congratulations! My Santa Barbarian co-worker says that the place is beautiful, and that all the stars go there. You're going to do great.

Nuala,
I don't have a car, but I can help you load up a vehicle, and I'll go down with you (if someone can drive me back) to help you unload everything. I'm also really good at packing things into vehicles. Let me know if I can help.

i'm not backing out. road trip! gene, you and i can go in my car with the bigger items, unload, and then drive back up. and anyone else who wants to go visit santa barbara for a day/weekend is welcome to come too. she really isn't taking that much stuff, so i think that i can take 3 people plus me. only if i am taking allergic people the cat is going to have to go in the nuala car.

p.s. famous people! take candid photos and post them!
p.p.s. that sucks about the uniform.

Posted by: michele on May 19, 2003 02:08 PM

wow, congratulations!

it sounds like a fun roadtrip, and i will go if you need someone else. if you don't need someone else but do need another car, gene or whoever is free to borrow mine.

Wow. That was quick. Thanks for all the congradulations. Apparently all the stars do stay there. I'm going to have a shocked look on my face all the time. Woo-hoo!

Thanks for all the offers to help move. My roomates won't be moving in until the next week so you're all more than welcome to stay at my place. Course there won't be any furniture yet, but as long as you don't mind sleep baggin it....

The cat will be in my car so any allergic people can drive with Michele. The more the merrier. I'll take whoever comes down to help out to dinner....

I'm going to miss you guys something awful.

holy crap!! can we go to the place with the belly dancer?!? i'll pay for my own food. either that or i want to go eat in the restaurant of the place you will be working. i'm assuming they have a eatery and i'm also assuming there will be famous people there who will belly dance for me. choo-choo! here's my ticket, i wanna ride that train!

Posted by: michele on May 19, 2003 02:38 PM

Well we can totally go to the Moroccan place. Or we can make reservations at the resturant at the SYR, but it's going to be more expensive. But either way should be lots of fun. I'll warn though, they try and make you get up and dance with the belly dancer.

YAY NUALA!!! that's so exciting! i'm so excited for you! now we can see each other more often! YAY! i wish i could come up to help you move in, but it looks like you may be covered in that area anyway...
but CONGRATULATIONS!! and i'm sure we'll see each other soonlike.
are you going to be down this weekend at all?

Posted by: jade on May 19, 2003 02:49 PM

btw...YAY place with famous people! toby met brad pitt (who lives in montecito) he came into home depot one day...maybe you'll get to meet him too! you'll have to tell me all about them.

Posted by: jade on May 19, 2003 02:51 PM

Mmmmm...Brad Pitt. Maybe I will, but why would he stay there if he already has a place in Montecito. Maybe he'll come for the food....Did Toby help him? Cause that would be cool...mmm Brad Pitt. So cute.

No I'm not going to be down next weekend. I've been down two weekends in a row so now I'll not be back until I move in, but I'm sure I'll see you soon after that. And hopefully you'll eventually move your butt back up here!

Posted by: nuala on May 19, 2003 02:57 PM

i really do actually want to go, but you don't have to buy me dinner. that would be too expensive.

Posted by: didofoot on May 19, 2003 02:58 PM

the plow and angel place isn't as expensive as the other one. and it looks tasty. AND i want to see this place you will be working at. i will buy my own food and i vote we go there. but i can be swayed into eating somewhere else and just driving over and strolling around your new place of business. (but the idea of fancy dinner appeals to me.)

i am so jealous of you!!!

Posted by: michele on May 19, 2003 03:01 PM

i am suddenly incredibly tempted to move to SB and apply to work there. but really i don't want to work there so much as i want to go there. sigh. pretty.

Posted by: michele on May 19, 2003 03:05 PM

if all goes well...less than a year, less than a year....i'm already counting down the days.

Posted by: jade on May 19, 2003 03:05 PM

i am down with fancy dinner also. because i have so many things i could wear. so many many things.

Posted by: didofoot on May 19, 2003 03:07 PM

sorry, i am totally behind on the commenting here. um...brad pitt!

Posted by: didofoot on May 19, 2003 03:08 PM

Okay well I don't think they take reservations at the Plow and Angel but we can give it a shot. Or we can make reservations at the Stonehouse. Whatever.

So I guess Fancy Dinner it is. Woo-hoo. Jade you sure you don't want to come up that weekend?

Yea less than a year. Yea Jade. Did you ever find a person to rent out that room of yours?

Posted by: nuala on May 19, 2003 03:14 PM

those ruddy angel-plowing bastards! i'll show them my reservations...

Posted by: michele on May 19, 2003 03:19 PM

i wish i could! but i've already gone up twice in the last month and then again this weekend, and then hollywood next weekend (YAY! coldplay concert! YAAY!!)...so it'll be a bit much on my car.
and NO, i still haven't found a roomie! it's been ridiculous! i've met some cool people who were totally interested, but flaked out when it came to the credit check part...sucks. making it difficult to save up for grad school. (which reminds me, i'd like to talk to you about what you know about applying for scholarships & grants for grad school)

Posted by: jade on May 19, 2003 03:25 PM

Oh that's right. I'm sorry. With all this crap that's been going on I TOTALLY forgot to call you back. The thing is I don't know much about the scholarships and grant stuff. I don't do that at work and the stuff my coworkers do is grants that the Professors get from companies to do their research so....yea. I am no help at all. Honestly the person I would suggest you talk to is someone in the Grad admissions office or in the department office. Ask them what kinds of grants they give out and how to qualify for them and see about becoming a TA to help pay for stuff.

Posted by: nuala on May 19, 2003 03:29 PM

yeah they let you become a TA the second year (which is a really sweet deal cuz on top of salary, they pay your entire tuition & fees, etc.) but i'd like to get some help with the first year so i don't have to worry so much when i first move back. i guess this fall when i start applying i'll call the grad admissions lady and talk to her then about other options. she did mention that i'm eligible for the regents fellowship (that would be so awesome if i could get that!!)...thanks for your advice! i wasn't sure where to ask. when i was an undergrad i went to the financial aid office and they were SO not helpful, but this lady has been very helpful already so there does appear to be hope!
