After spending a weekend watching the old Superman movies and drooling over the idea of watching the hot boys from Roswell, imagine my suprise when I read this article on the msn.com gossip page:
"Superman" Finally Takes Off
Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane, it's the endlessly delayed, mondo-budgeted "Superman" movie! Variety reports the Man of Steel flick, penned by "Alias" creator J.J. Abrams, may finally take flight later this year, with "Charlie's Angels" director McG at the helm. According to the trade, Warner Bros. hasn't yet given the $200 million pic the go-ahead nor has McG officially been hired, but that hasn't stopped the director from screen-testing six relatively unknown actors for the role of the spandex-clad superhero. While everyone from Nicolas Cage to Jude Law to Jake Gyllenhaal has been mentioned for the lead, recent hopefuls include Jason Behr ("Roswell"), Jared Padalecki ("The Gilmore Girls"), Henry Cavill ("The Count of Monte Cristo"), and Michael Cassidy.
First of all I am vaguely pleased that JJ Abrams wrote the script as I love Alias, and am disturbed by the idea of McG directing by am VERY excited at the idea of Max (aka Jason Behr) being superman. Or even the boy from Gilmore Girls......
I will entertain these ideas to no end. I find them fascinating....
Also I've posted some pictures on cementhorizon. Enjoy
Posted by nuala at June 24, 2004 07:04 PMJason Behr! yay! but please god not nicolas cage, PLEASE.
Posted by: didofoot on June 25, 2004 09:00 AMi second kristen! max would be a way better superman than dean also i think. but anyone would be better than nicholas cage.
put...the...lois...down.
Posted by: michele on June 25, 2004 09:03 AM
yeah i heard about nic cage awhile ago - BAD IDEA.
jason behr IS cute...i don't know, this is a hard one cause no one can replace Christopher Reeves for me. in fact i just bought the dvds cause now that i saw them all again i HAD to own them.
Posted by: Ady on June 25, 2004 09:45 AMyes, i loved christopher reeves. his superman was my first crush, when i was five. but i am willing to allow max to pay tribute to his greatness.
Posted by: didofoot on June 25, 2004 09:57 AMI like Jason Behr as well. Jake is the obvious choice right now becuase he's so big. I think Ian Somerhalder is also a great choice. Good actor. BEAUTIFUL blue eyes. He's my fave.
Posted by: Clint on June 25, 2004 10:03 AMhmmm, i liked ian somerhelder on the WB's 'young americans' when he was in love with katherine moennig playing a boy. mmmm, shane.
Posted by: michele on June 25, 2004 10:08 AMHe was also hot when he slept with Mary Steenburgen in "Life as a House" and my all time favorite was when he was the dark brooding homo in "Rules of Attraction." Although I didn't understand his obsession with James Van Der Beek. He's so not cute!
Posted by: Clint on June 25, 2004 10:18 AMi love jake googly but he is all wrong from this. all wrong. and that is what i will say when i am called to serve on the audition committee.
Posted by: didofoot on June 25, 2004 10:20 AM
jake is a little sheepish for the role, he's hot, but not manly hot, although tobey maguire is much like Jake and does a fabulous job as Spiderman...oh decisions...if i don't approve there will be hell to pay at that casting office.
superman needs to be both manly hot and sort of retiring. thus, i think jason behr would be best. jake isn't really...retiring like clark kent. but jason behr could be. plus, jason behr in glasses? hot!
Posted by: michele on June 25, 2004 10:50 AMyeah, though i love toby maguire i didn't think he was at all right for a superhero role. he was cute and everything but i would have cast someone sexy rather than cute. jason behr has sexy senstive loner in spades.
Posted by: didofoot on June 25, 2004 11:08 AMI think this is the biggest discussion I've ever generated.
I'm all about Jason. Nick Cage = Gross. and Michele that reference to Con Air was freaking priceless. That was the silliest movie EVER.
Jake whatever I really am indifferent to him. But Jason has already delt with superpowers I think it's time he stepped up to be Superman.
LOVE HIM
Posted by: nuala on June 25, 2004 11:11 AMAnd no one will ever replace Christopher Reeves. I love those freaking movies
Posted by: nuala on June 25, 2004 11:22 AMi thought tobey did an excellent job as spiderman precisely because he wasn't sexy. he was no one special (as peter parker) and then he chose to become a hero. his portrayal was excellent. unlike the over-acting hack named william defoe.
Posted by: michele on June 25, 2004 11:25 AMi never actually read the spiderman comics so i don't know how he should be, but i like my superhero to be a man's man like christopher reeves or huge assman. but tobey was very good and has a knack for making you really like his characters.
Posted by: didofoot on June 25, 2004 11:47 AM
actually its WILLEM Defoe, so not only does he over act but he's pretentious.
if they weren't going for younger then Hugh Jackman would be perfect, except for the fact that he has already played a comic book character but whatever.
it doesn't matter, i can't let go of Christopher Reeves, like Kristen he was one of my first crushes and a girl never gets over that.
for now i say Jason...
Posted by: ady on June 25, 2004 12:00 PMI remember reading about this script a few years ago on Ain't It Cool News. From that description, and the presence of McG, this is not going to be a Christopher Reeve-type /Superman film. Or, for that matter, any good at all, but maybe they revised it.
Nic Cage would be a disaster.

well..i'm hoping the JJ Abrams factor gives it some integrity..otherwise i'm gonna cry.
I haven't seen Alias, so maybe what I consider a shocking assault on the Superman story may be standard Alias business.
I just don't want to see a CG Krypton landscape or superhero kung fu. However, I am also a jerk who never likes anything and never has any fun, so take my sentiments with a grain of your favorite spice/condiment.
Posted by: sean on June 25, 2004 01:06 PMCurry....Basil?...mmmm, no...BITTERS!
"Bitters are, as their name suggest, a bitter or bittersweet type of spirit made from different herbs, roots and plants. Bitters are used to flavor and add a dry zest to cocktails and cooking. Because of their function as a digestive aid and appetite stimulant bitters are often used in before- and after dinner cocktails (aperitifs and digestifs).
When using bitters in cocktails it is important to be cautious as a little too much can ruin the cocktail. Generally, bitters also have a high alcohol content and should never be used in non-alcoholic drinks."
For, the record, J. J. Abrams is great and I believe will do the franchise justice as long as Superman traditionalists are willing to put down their clubs, picks, and torches.
Posted by: Clint on June 25, 2004 01:15 PMno, my 'have you seen alias' comment was directed at ady's (and now clint's) assertion that jj abrams is great. because although i do enjoy alias a lot, i enjoy it in the sense that the dreadful direction, acting, script, plots, score and enormous foreheads give me endless material for mockery. i don't want to see that happen to superman though. superman is great in a different sense.
so...i too can be taken with bitters i guess.
Posted by: didofoot on June 25, 2004 01:21 PMI'm actually a big fan of Alias. Color me biased, but I don't see a difference. As fond as I am of the memories of watching Superman when I was 8, the plots, scripts, and acting are much more contrived than anything I've seen on Alias, or Felicity.
Posted by: Clint on June 25, 2004 01:44 PMit's true. the man is an alien with a deadly rock nemesis called kryptonite. now if that ain't stupid, i don't know what is.
plus his disguise is to wear glasses. alias has way better disguises than that.
Posted by: michele on June 25, 2004 02:06 PMI whole-heartedly concur. The wigs and makeup department for that show alone should be commended for the things they've been able to pull off on that show.
Posted by: Clint on June 25, 2004 02:10 PMyes, all this is true, very true. on the other hand, in the superman films i only hated the villain, whereas in alias i hate everyone. i feel this is a failing on the part of alias, and i can't entirely blame the actors because i liked jennifer garner in that movie we saw. but this is just my personal preference.
Posted by: didofoot on June 25, 2004 02:10 PMi like some of the villians in alias. mostly sark. because he's british, cute, and snarky. snarky sark-y.
Posted by: michele on June 25, 2004 02:16 PMPersonal prefernence is what it's all about. Well I clearly won't be going to see Superman with YOU then since you're obviously a "JJ-phobe." ;-)
Posted by: Clint on June 25, 2004 02:24 PMI personally like when Justin Theroux guest-starred for a few episodes as a villain. I think he's rediculously hot. Loved him on Sex and the City as well. He's on the new season of Six Feet Under right now playing Rachel Griffith's love interest.
Posted by: Clint on June 25, 2004 02:26 PMoh yeah i forgot about snark. he is cute. i don't hate him at all. but everyone else i still hate.
Posted by: didofoot on June 25, 2004 02:30 PMwhatever happened to the wonder woman movie i was so excited about?
Posted by: didofoot on June 25, 2004 03:34 PMyes but i want a movie, with new special effects and possibly jennifer lopez.
Posted by: didofoot on June 25, 2004 03:41 PMyou WANT Jennifer Lopez to act? That's it. The gloves are coming off. Hold my rings girl, this bitch is goin down. ;-)
Posted by: Clint on June 26, 2004 03:57 AMin this scenario, is jennifer lopez the bitch or am i? (i guess if you have to ask...)
Posted by: didofoot on June 28, 2004 10:30 AMYeah, it was you. No one should be encouraging Ms. Jenny from the block (the Westchester block)to be doing ANYTHING, especially acting.
