Brace Yourselves

So ever since I saw the Indian movie Mohabbatein a few years ago, I've been obsessed with one of the actress from the film, Aishwarya Rai. (In fact Sumit brought me two of her movies last time he went home. It's nice to have these hard to get Indian Movie connections. Maybe not for anyone else, but for me, who can't seem to get a hold of them, and wants them, it's great!) But basically I love to watch anything she is in as she's just stunning. (side note: She's a former Miss World and is currently called the "Queen of Bollywood")

Well wasn't I freaking fascinated when I stumbled upon an article in USA Today yesterday at work which described Ms. Rai's next project as Bride and Prejudice, directed by Gurinder Chadha, the very woman who brought us Bend it Like Beckham with our lovely favorite, Mr. Cheek bones.

If this combination was not exciting enough to me, can you possibly guess what Bride and Prejudice is about? I'm sure you can. The official description is, ahem, "An update of Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice that incorporates the musical styles of India with those of Hollywood, Broadway and Chadha's (the director) native England" I nearly fell off my chair at work. Musical numbers to the plot of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice with my favorite Indian actress, most likely in the part of Lizzie! Good god it's like a dream I never dared dream come to life. And I'm sure you're wondering, because I was, who is playing our loveable Mr. Darcy? Well unfortunately it's not Mr. Cheek bones, it is however, Martin Henderson, best well know for his role in The Ring.

I'm highly excited by the whole project. It's going to be released in 2004. Here's hoping it doesn't disappoint me. I'm sure it's already disappointed the rest of you, but I'm only concerned about me here.

Oh god... I'm hyperventilating. I came so close to terrifying badness that I can hardly believe I escaped it. I was skimming through the part of your post about Martin Henderson and somehow mis-processed the words "The Ring" as a reference to one of the Lord of the Rings movies. So after clicking on the Martin Henderson link and not recognizing him as any specific character, I clicked on the "The Ring" link.

Thank god my browser responded so slowly that I had time to realize my mistake, gasp and click "STOP" before anything loaded. Eeeeeeeeee!

i support this. i generally have a disdain for remakes or "re-imaginings" or whatever but i'm definitely on board with anything that has the potential to make "pride and prejudice" less terrible. and hot indian actresses might be just what the doctor ordered.

I LOVE Pride and Prejudice this is what makes me so freaking happy.

I will bring it up when I come up in March, unless you need it before, in which case I can send it to you.

Doesn't it just feel peachy in here now?

Posted by: nuala on January 10, 2004 09:56 PM

no, march is ok. march will be ok. does your mom check her work email cause i haven't heard back from her yet? i should email the other one too.

totally not peachy. maybe the color shows up differently for us, but this is a serious dark orange like pumpkins. it's halloween-y. i like it though. it was just shocking at first. you go expecting mint green and are confronted with ORANGE.

Posted by: michele on January 11, 2004 10:40 AM

OH weird. It's more peachy on my screen. Because I hade it tilted. Now it is more orangy. I'm just trying it out for now. I may go back to green or to a new color....I dunno.

Mom should check her email. did you send it recently? I mean it is the weekend....I'll email her to look out for it.

Posted by: nuala on January 11, 2004 11:22 AM

Posted by: michele on January 11, 2004 01:25 PM

dood, this is very exciting. are you going to get a copy of it? will it be on netflix?

Posted by: didofoot on January 12, 2004 08:44 AM

Actually I believe they are going to release it on the big screen even here in the states. There will be bigger than life indians singing about pride and prejudice.

Posted by: nuala on January 12, 2004 11:13 AM

don't listen to michele. i like the pumpkin color.

indian women (i've always thought) are the most lovely on the planet. (sorry girls). My dream woman is Daljit Dhaliwal. She's my "Johnny Depp".

i'm not a big fan of musicals, but i could get into indian musicals. sometimes they air these goofy indian music videos on one of those obscure channels. I always get mesmerized.

Nuala, did you check out the all-star survivors list?

http://www.cbs.com/primetime/survivor8/index.shtml

I'm excited about tom, rupert and rudy, but jenn l. and rob m.???? I'm sorry, but there's no way they deserve to be there...

Posted by: shoefly on January 12, 2004 10:18 PM

Yes I did. It should be fun when it starts but I don't know all the people as I didn't watch all the earlier seasons.

How was your vacation by the way? Or I guess holiday...you didn't take all that time off did you?

Posted by: nuala on January 13, 2004 09:31 AM

No time off, but thanks for asking. Good news is that plans were approved by the city and hopefully construction can begin in a few months on the studio out back. Also, after a miserable few weeks, it's gotten warmer recently. No atila the hun pictures yet from this season. Oh yeah, been going on lots of dates like 3-4/week. I think my star is rising.
