The Secret Meaning of MY Name

I got the following email from my sister today. It made me laugh and it was kinda about me so I thought I would share.

so i'm at work really early reading this book called The Secret Meaning of Names and yes they actually have your name in there!

so i took the liberty of reading it and thought you should know that as far as i am concerned it's pretty dead on, as is mine. But i'm totally jealous - you have really good basic stats. Here they are:

Your element: Earth
Your Mineral: Sun Stone
Your Animal: Kangaroo
Your Plant: Lavender (i specifically hate you for this one)
Your Sign: Virgo
Your color: Green
and your personality type is so right on: EARTH MOTHER

And since I know you're dying to know, my basic stats are:

My element: Air
My mineral: Pitchblende (what the fuck?)
My Animal: Hedgehog (again, what the fuck)
My Plant: Valerian (never heard of it)
My Sign: Libra
My color: Blue
and my personality type is THE ENTERPRISING INTRIGUER
everything was pretty spot on, almost everything.

The book is caled the Secret Meaning of Names by Pierre Le Rouzic, you should really check it out if you're browsing in a bookstore anytime soon.

just thought you'd be interested, it seems like something i would find posted on your blog, fun interesting tidbit about yourself.

Hee hee....My animal is a kangaroo...hop hop

i like hedgehogs too though, adie. =)

what am i?! me me! and is it different with only one 'l'? i think it should be. since i am special.

maybe we should call you duckaroo now.

Posted by: michele on August 11, 2003 12:14 AM

adie i can see hedgehog for you. cute as a button but prickly when cornered. and nuala, totally a kangaroo: marsupial, good at boxing, sort of furry. wait, no.

Posted by: didofoot on August 11, 2003 08:07 AM

i sent Nuala the basic stats for Kristen and Michele for your entertainment, and i suppose i can see the hedgehog thing...but i'm cuter

Posted by: Adrienne on August 11, 2003 09:32 AM

I also like hedgehogs, but my somewhat vague affection for them became the birthday/Christmas gift equivalent of a running joke, so I have four or five of the little stuffed bastards somewhere at my parents' house. Luckily, the gift-givers soon switched to Hawaiian shirts...

Posted by: sean on August 11, 2003 09:35 AM

nuala! where are my stats? thank you, adie!

holy crap, kristen. those things are cute. my brother was thinking of getting a hedgehog. maybe i should push for it. they've got to be better than ferrets after all.

Posted by: michele on August 11, 2003 10:06 AM

hey, load those pics from last night, will you?

i was reading about hediges - apparently they pee and poop on you everytime you pick them up, without fail.

Posted by: didofoot on August 11, 2003 10:12 AM

which, i might add, adie does NOT do.

Valerian Extract:

Latin Name: Valeriana officinalis (Smells bad - Works good!)
Common Name: Valerian, All Heal, Garden Heliotrope

If pregnant or lactating, consult a physician before using.

Usage
Primarily for insomnia, Nature's Way Valerian works like a sedative helping you to relax, and to sleep deeply and restfully, reducing night awakenings as well as increasing dream recall the next day. It is also sometimes used for relief from anxiety and stress. It has also been found to be useful for cramping, dysmenorrhea, rheumatic pains, epilepsy, and nerve-related high blood pressure.

History
Valerian derives its name, in part, from the Latin word valere meaning to make strong. Additionally the term can be translated to mean to be in good health. It was commonly used long before the Romans came to power, was widely popular in Medieval times. Today it is commercially cultivated in Belgium, Holland, England, and India for medicine -- mostly for its tranquilizing effects for disorders of the nervous system. Used anciently and promoted in the tenth century by Arab physicians, this native of Europe and Western Asia is still very popular in Europe today. It is also used as a flavoring agent in foods and beverages.

Additional Information
Valerian Root has been extensively researched and is used worldwide for its calming and relaxing effects. Valerian is most effective in nervous conditions which are stress-induced. It has achieved wide acclaim as a mild, non-tranquilizing sedative in Europe and is available there in a variety of proprietary preparations.

Pitchblende

Formula: UO2
Lustre: Dull
Diapheny: Opaque
Colour: Black, Brownish-black

Amorphous, dense, black, pitchy form of the crystalline uranium oxide mineral uraninite; A source of radium and uranium. Pitchblende is found in granular masses and has a greasy lustre.
Largely natural uranium oxide, UO2 and UO3, it usually contains some lead and variable amounts of thorium and rare-earth elements. It is massive in form, frequently with a botryoidal, or grape-cluster, appearance, and has a variable but high specific gravity. Pitchblende is greenish, brownish, or black in color, with a pitchy to submetallic luster. The uranium yield is from 50% to 80%. Uraninite, a closely related ore richer in uranium, commonly crystallizes in the cubic system. It yields 65% to 80% uranium and has a specific gravity somewhat higher than that of pitchblende. The color range is from deep black to brown. Both ores occur as primary constituents of quartz veins and with other metals. They supply radium and polonium in addition to uranium. Although the ores occur in small quantities throughout the world, the Great Lakes region of Canada, Congo (Kinshasa), the Czech Republic, the Colorado Plateau, Australia, and South Africa are the major sources.

From Ady:

so here are Michele's basic stats (even listed as Michele):

Her Element: Earth
Her Mineral: Quartz
Her Animal: Leopard (bitch)
Her Plant: Pear Tree
Her Sign: Taurus
Her Color: Red
and her personality type is THE TENACIOUS CONTESTANT

you both are better judges of the accuracy of the rest of the breakdown so i suggest you check it out.

and here are Kristen's stats in case she is interested as well:

Her Element: Water
Her Mineral: Obsidian
Her Animal: Lizard
Her Plant: Lily of the Valley
Her Sign: Cancer
Her Color: Violet
and her personality type is THE MOONLIT CHARMER

you're welcome

love,
ady

Kristen, Can I just say "LAY LIKE A LIZARD ON A ROCK!!"

And Michele you would have some sort of cat as an animal. My poor sister wants a better animal. I kinda like the hedgehog though.

Posted by: nuala on August 11, 2003 04:37 PM

yes! yes! leopard! purr purrr purrr big black mmmmmmmm pard. like tard, BUT BETTER.

may i say though, i wish i was a moonlit charmer rather than being a tenacious game show participant.

Posted by: michele on August 11, 2003 05:05 PM

yes but I am afraid of lizards and do not get along with cancers generally. and am not, frankly, all that charming. still, i like to think i am.

Posted by: didofoot on August 12, 2003 09:29 AM

I'm not saying you have to like Lizards, just lay like them and soak up the sun. Which you do.

Posted by: nuala on August 12, 2003 12:06 PM

it's true that lizards are cold-blooded, and so is kristen, lizards are covered in scales, and so is kristen, and lizards lay in the sun, as does kristen.

Posted by: michele on August 12, 2003 12:19 PM

Lizards are also often caught and eaten by cats (small leopards).

BTW - Thanks for the DVD, Michele (and Kristen). I can't wait to watch it.

Posted by: shoefly on August 12, 2003 08:51 PM

i wanna know what my name means! wonder if it's even in there....

Posted by: jade on August 13, 2003 03:54 PM

Jade, from my sister:

okay now that i am officially the name guru, please post this info for the beloved Jade. Here are her stats:

Her Element: Fire (ooh la la)
Her Mineral: Coral
Her Animal: Cicada (sounds exotic, but not quite sure if this is one to be excited about)
Her Plant: Cherry Tree
Her Sign: Leo
Her Color: Blue
and her personality type is THE SENSUAL SINGER

Posted by: nuala on August 13, 2003 04:50 PM

ew! cicadas are gross bugs who come out in the summer and make a lot of buzzing noise. they're hideous. sorry, jade. the rest of it is good though. cherries. yumm. and sensual.

Posted by: michele on August 13, 2003 05:48 PM

thanks ady! (and nuala for posting it)
yah cicadas are gross. hmm...but i do come out in summer. maybe i make buzzing noises too?

Posted by: jade on August 14, 2003 08:42 AM

jade, you are only the second leo i have ever (knowingly) known. i am so fascinated by this apparently rare sign.

Posted by: didofoot on August 14, 2003 11:14 AM

so what does shoe fly's name mean, ady?

Posted by: didofoot on August 14, 2003 11:14 AM

wait a minute, i am not a cancer, therefore jade is not a leo. dammit.

Posted by: didofoot on August 14, 2003 11:14 AM

yah, i'm actually a gemini. so does that mean i'm supposed to marry a leo? or i just happen to get along with leos? or does it mean that i just *think* i'm a gemini, but am really a leo?
OR--wait for it--i'm a gemini that (instead of being twins) is actually a triplet, the third counterpart being of the leonic persuasion!

Posted by: jade on August 14, 2003 11:49 AM

By the way Shoefly's name is actually Aaron

Posted by: nuala on August 14, 2003 11:49 AM

Jade is very lucky. Gemini is the best sign.

I'm surprised Kristen deems Leos "rare". I'm surrounded by Leos. My brother, best friend, and another good friend are all leos. They're a good, friendly bunch. I also seem to get on well with Sagitariouses. But I don't like to think that any of it really bares weight. Still, it's something to chat about and I'm all for chatting excessively.

I guess if someone has time/interest they could look up aaron in the good book. I'm sure my animal will be very impressive.

Posted by: shoe fly on August 14, 2003 09:18 PM

Nuala, was Ady in the blackout?

Posted by: shoefly on August 15, 2003 07:24 AM

um yeah....i was in the blackout and had to walk my ass ten miles to get home to eventually sit in the dark. times like these i REALLY miss my big sister, we could have been playing cards all night.....why aren't you here??? clint and i are going out tonight to sit at a cafe and play cards and drink...now if only we were in spain......

all is well though, at least my neighborhood now has power. and aaron your name meaning is coming, but i have to wait to get to work to get the book.

Posted by: Ady on August 15, 2003 11:58 AM

oh wow, that was fast. i am glad you have power. sorry about the ten miles thing, but i bet now you have buns of steel.

Posted by: didofoot on August 15, 2003 12:15 PM

10 miles is 10 miles too many!

Posted by: michele on August 15, 2003 12:44 PM

Yes, it's pretty amazing how many people bubbled up from the subway. I'm glad nobody panicked. It looked like a big party! Except instead of dancing and drinking cold beer, people were uncomfortably pressed together, overheated, irritated, and exhausted. Still, there was bonding in the Big Apple, and that's priceless! New Yorkers need more bonding opportunities like that.

Do you think if Aly and Nuala would in fact had the chance to drink together all night, that they might have done so until they "blacked out"? (This is the kind of humor that drove Nuala from my loving embrace. Where are you Nuala?)

What's the cementhorizon record for most comments? 30 is getting up there...

Posted by: shoefly on August 15, 2003 03:01 PM

50 something i think.

Posted by: michele on August 15, 2003 03:09 PM

Aaron you are a complete dork, but I miss laughing at you everyday.

Ady,

I wish I had been there to play cards too. No one likes to play cards like we do. I seriously could play all night. have fun with Clint and tell him I said hi. I'm sorry you had to walk so far. I was thinking about you today and yesterday though. Nice to know you're ok though. I'll talk to you soon.

Posted by: nuala on August 15, 2003 08:10 PM

Aaron, here are your stats:

Your Element: Fire
Your Mineral: Sandstone
Your Animal: Beaver
Your Plant: Hemlock
Your Sign: Sagittarius
Your Color: Red
and your personality type is THE TRIUMPHANT BUILDER

enjoy

Posted by: Ady on August 17, 2003 04:22 AM

I can do nothing but laugh at that entire description, much like I laugh at Aaron himself. I will not even comment on the animal. But Triumphant Builder is freaking hilarious!

PS Thanks Ady

Posted by: nuala on August 17, 2003 11:23 AM

Several comments:

1). Thanks, Ady. You’re a blessing to us all. Also, you’re book is very accurate.

2). Nuala, you’re misusing an expression. You mean to say “laughing with you”, not laughing AT you”. I’m not a circus clown or a comedian. I can’t help if in addition to being born with Adonis good looks and a Casanova charisma, I’m also intelligent, witty and modest. In many ways I’m a victim of my own genetically based good-fortune.

3). The reading is as noted earlier, accurate, and not simply a source of amusement. I mean, let's get into it. First of all, the beaver is very productive. He’s clever and rascally, but he’s a homebuilder, and his pelt is supple and, well, the flat tail thing, let’s just say, "Watch Out!" In this same way I am clever. I am also a homebuilder. It’s amazingly accurate. I also have a flat tail, except my tail is not flat. It’s rotund and supple, yet muscular. Also, it's a useful tool for patting down earth into useful shapes. My teeth are also formidable weapons, and I like toothpicks. Fire. OK, who can deny that although my house survived this element, I am nevertheless also a very fiery and energetic character? Also, I’m hot. Very hot! And please do not let the double meaning escape your attention. Hot, I say! Sandstone? Yes, it is an excellent building stone. It can be chiseled and dressed to a smooth surface in various attractive shapes. Sandstone has many uses, such as roofing, flooring, paving, paneling, beams, pillars, arches, doors and window sills, wall facing, fence posts, mile stones etc. It is especially useful for exterior cladding in sea shore buildings due to acid & thermal resistant properties. (I found this info online). Hemlock? Hemlock is a type of tree (also researched online): West Coast Hemlock has a wide range of uses because it combines high strength with excellent appearance and working qualities. The combination of colour, strength, durability and finishing characteristics makes it ideal for interior uses like wall paneling or mouldings. The strength of Hemlock lumber is ideal for house construction in the typical North American wood frame building. Sagittarius? Very cool. I get on well with Sag’s. Red? How true. I look smashing in red. It’s a subtle color that conveys discretion, modestly, and warmth. I'm warm, or rather, hot! Finally, the triumphant builder? Yes, well this is uncanny. It’s verging on scary. Also, I build more than houses. I build my own charming personality, which is low key and charming, but also refined and charming.
Thanks again Ady! I can’t wait to share myself with everyone, and tell them about how special I am!

Posted by: cody on August 17, 2003 03:31 PM

Aaron, you are scary! It's amazing how much bs you can pull out of no where....

I continue to laugh AT you

Posted by: nuala on August 17, 2003 10:14 PM

Yes, that was scary. I'm the triumphant builder of inane ramblings. Thanks for being so charitable. I'm going back into my hole for a while.
